Robert Ivy

Editor in Chief of Architectural Record

In 1996, Robert Ivy took on the fulltime editorial leadership of 113-year-old Architectural Record, the world’s most widely read architectural journal. In 2003 Record received U.S. magazine publishing’s equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize, the National Magazine Award for General Excellence.

Ivy’s book on the architect Fay Jones received the top award from the Art Library Society of North America, which cited its “highest standards of scholarship, design and production.” In addition, he has contributed hundreds of other essays, editorials, and articles, and prefaces, chapters, or forewords to many books, including the recently released Imagining Ground Zero, by Suzanne Stephens.

Mr. Ivy is a frequent speaker and awards jury chairman.  He has delivered numerous keynote speeches and interviews for print media and television, as well as moderated panels at the Library of Congress, the National Building Museum, and Rockefeller Center; New York’s Guggenheim Museum; the Chicago Art Institute; and California’s Monterey Design Conference.

In 2002 and 2004, Ivy served as the Commissioner of the United States Pavilion at the Venice Biennale for architecture. A fellow of the American Institute of Architects, he holds a Masters in Architecture from Tulane University, where he serves on the advisory board, and a BA (cum laude) in English from the University of the South (TN).
